    About the Program

The island nation of Singapore has experienced a remarkable transformation since becoming independent in 1965.  From a third-world nation with no natural resources, it has developed into the third largest global financial center and the world’s second largest shipping port while garnering recognition as one of the wealthiest countries in the world.  The city-state has won praises for providing its citizens with excellent healthcare and education.  These accomplishments are particularly impressive when one considers that the country is the size of New York City and has a multiracial society with competing cultural interests and priorities.

In our 21-day trip, we will focus on Singapore’s higher education system by visiting universities, speaking with administrators and interacting with local students.  The class will examine the impact of pluralism and the role of government in supporting cultural institutions. Included in the itinerary are tours of ethnic heritage areas, museums, places of worship and government agencies.  The class will also visit attractions that have made Singapore a global tourist destination.
