Grades

Graded/Pass/No Credit Option (GPNC)

GPNC. Some institutions have restrictions on the grading of GPNC courses. Stony Brook students should refer to the policy on GPNC in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Incompletes

If an instructor agrees to assign an Incomplete in a course, the instructor will determine the date by which you must complete the work. However, the date may not be later than November 1, otherwise the grade of I will automatically be changed to I/F and calculated as a failing grade.

No Record

Grades of No Record (NR) which have not been replaced by a final grade or by a W by the end of the ninth week of the fall semester (for spring and summer NR grades) will be converted to one of the following grades:

• N/F for letter-graded courses
• N/U for courses graded A-C/U or S/U
• N/C for courses taken under the Graded Pass No Credit option

The grade of N/F will be treated as a failure for the purpose of academic standing and will be averaged as an F when the student's grade point average is computed.

Grade Reports

You may access your grades on the SOLAR System. If you need to have a transcript mailed to your school you may also order this on the SOLAR System.

Transcripts

To have an official academic transcript sent to another institution please use your SOLAR System Account or visit our Transcript webpage for more information.

The University will not issue a transcript if you have any outstanding charges.

Transferring Credits

Stony Brook Students

Before enrolling in summer courses at other institutions, be sure to obtain prior approval from Stony Brook to ensure that the credits will be transferable to Stony Brook. Permission forms are available from the Transfer Office, E-2360 Melville Library.

Check with your department about transferring credits in your major.

Check with the Academic and Transfer Advising Services Office concerning transferring courses to meet D.E.C. and Stony Brook Curriculum (SBC) requirements. Certain limitations apply.

Visiting Summer Students

If you attend another institution during the academic year have your Stony Brook course selections approved for transfer credit by that institution, even if it is another SUNY school.

Stony Brook academic regulations and student responsibilities apply to visiting Summer Sessions students as well as to those who attend Stony Brook during the academic year.

The University reserves the right to change academic regulations or to cancel any course for whatever reason it may deem appropriate. • Current Students

  Currently enrolled students may register for classes on the SOLAR System during the advanced registration period. Graduate Students and Seniors are given enrollment appointments. Graduate students (new and non matriculated graduate students) and Undergraduate students (visiting and Matriculated Freshman, Sophomore, and Juniors) receive an enrollment appointment for the open enrollment date. Please check the Summer Session Academic Calendar for specific dates.

  The SOLAR System registration runs 24/7 with occasional shut downs for updates. Students register on the Web, or in person at the Registrar/Summer Session Office.

• Visiting Students
  Please note that admission to summer classes is for Summer Sessions only. Admission to our Undergraduate and Graduate Programs is a separate Admissions process.

• International Students
   Stony Brook International students are eligible to enroll in summer classes.

  Visiting students, who currently hold a valid F-1 visa and attend a U.S. institution, are eligible to take summer courses, as long as they have obtained permission from their home institution.

  Visiting students who currently reside and attend school outside the U.S. (and do not already hold an F-1) may be eligible to take summer (& winter) classes. Please visit the International Summer School for more information.

  Students visiting the U.S. and currently hold a B1/2 visa are not eligible to take Summer Classes.

• Graduate Students
  If you have graduated from a four-year institution you must apply through the School of Professional Development (SPD) as a non-matriculating graduate student. You must allow a minimum of 3 - 5 business days for processing. The application fee is $90.00. Non-matriculated graduate students may register on the SOLAR System. You will be assigned a Stony Brook ID number which you will use for all registration transactions henceforth. It is important that you keep a record of your ID number (and the password you select to access the SOLAR System) in a safe place. Your ID number will not be sent to you again. You must come in-person to the Registrar's office with photo ID to receive it.

  The Non-matriculating Graduate Student Application is submitted online and found at the School of Professional Development.

• Adding Courses
  Important: After the first day of classes, you must obtain permission from the Department to register in a course. If you are registering in classes for the first time after the start of classes, you will be charged a late registration fee, and payment of tuition and fees will be due immediately.

• Dropping Courses
  You may drop courses without a record being kept and without financial liability through the first five (5) class days of the session.

  Informing the instructor, not attending the class, and/or not paying the tuition and fees does NOT cancel your registration and it does NOT cancel your financial obligation. If you decide to drop a course, you must officially drop them yourself by using the SOLAR System.

  Deadlines are listed in the Academic Calendar. You do not need permission to drop courses if you drop within the published deadlines.

  If you drop courses after the deadline in each session, you will receive a mark of W (Withdrawal). After the fifth Friday of each session, you may not withdraw from summer courses. It is also important that you drop the course(s) within the published deadlines to avoid being liable for tuition and fees, to be able to enroll in classes another semester, and to receive a transcript.

  The amount of refund, if any, is based on your official withdrawal date. Stony Brook issues no refunds after the second week of summer classes or more than one year after the end of the session in which you were enrolled.

• Maximum Credit Load
  Both undergraduate and graduate students may register for a maximum of nine (9) units per six-week session. Students are limited to one course of GPNC during the the entire Summer Session. Only undergraduates may GPNC courses.
• Auditing Courses
  Only matriculated Stony Brook students may audit summer courses. Matriculated students must have permission of the instructor. Stony Brook does not allow auditing of summer foreign language, science, laboratory, studio, physical education, or other "hands on" courses, although individual instructors may make occasional exceptions.

  The University does not keep a record of courses audited nor does it grant any credit for audited courses. Auditors are expected to refrain from participating in class discussions and may not turn in or ask for grading of homework, term papers, or examinations.

  Students may change their status in a summer course from auditor to enrolled student during the first week of classes in each session.

• Senior Citizen Auditing

  Adults who are 60 years of age or older may audit most New York State-funded, credit- bearing courses offered at Stony Brook upon payment of a $50 auditing fee, provided space is available in the classroom and the instructor permits auditors.

  The exceptions to this policy include foreign language, english literature, laboratory, studio art, physical education, and instrumental music courses, Health Science Center courses as well as courses offered self-supporting non-credit programs sponsored by the School of Professional Development.

• How do I access my courses?
  Many courses use Brightspace (https://brightspace.stonybrook.edu).

   

  In order to log in you must set up your NetID first: https://it.stonybrook.edu/services/netid.

     

  You will then be able to log into Brightspace at: https://brightspace.stonybrook.edu with your NetID.

• Who can attend Summer Sessions?
  Students who attend other institutions and non-degree students as well as Stony Brook students. If you have been admitted for the Fall semester and have received your Stony Brook ID number and wish to enroll in summer classes, please call 631.632.6175.
• Can high school students take summer classes?
  If you are a high school student who will complete your junior year in June and your grade point average is 85 or higher, you may take selected introductory (100-level) classes as a visiting Summer Sessions student. Submit the visiting undergraduate student application.
• Can International students take summer classes?
  Stony Brook International students are eligible to enroll in summer classes. Visiting students, who currently hold a valid F-1 visa and attend a U.S. institution, are eligible to take summer courses, as long as they have obtained permission from their home institution. Visiting students who currently reside and attend school outside the U.S. (and do not already hold an F-1) may be eligible to take summer (& winter) classes.

• How do I register for classes?
  Stony Brook students enroll through SOLAR. Visiting students must submit the undergraduate or graduate application, wait to receive their Stony Brook ID number and then enroll through the SOLAR System.
• What is the SOLAR System?
  The SOLAR System is Stony Brook's online student records system. You can register for, drop, and pay for your classes. You can also use it to view your class schedule, to see where your classes meet, and to view your grades at the end of the summer.
• How many credits can I register for?
  All students may enroll in 9 credits maximum per session for a total of 18 in all summer sessions.
• What will I need a Stony Brook ID number for?
  You will need this number to register and pay for classes, review and print your class schedule, view your grade(s) and request a transcript be sent to another institution on the SOLAR System.
• What do I do if I have forgotten my ID number?
  If you have forgotten your ID number you must come in person to the Registrar's office and provide us with a photo ID for proof of your identity. If you have forgotten your password for the SOLAR System, you can request a new one.
• How do I find a course description and class schedule?
  Use the SOLAR System, where you can search for classes, locations of classes and course descriptions. You do not need a Stony Brook ID number, just use the Public Access links on the SOLAR homepage and choose class search or course catalog.
• Will I automatically be dropped from my class if I never attend?
  No you will not be dropped from Summer Session courses for non-attendance. You must drop your course(s) on the SOLAR System , or you will be liable for all charges, including late fees.
• Is Financial Aid available for the summer?
  It may be. If you attend Stony Brook during the academic year check with Stony Brook's Financial Aid office. If you attend another institution, check with its Financial Aid office.
• Should I register for the "Graded Pass No Credit" option in the summer?
  If you are a visiting student, ask your home institution whether or not they will accept a "P" on your transcript. Stony Brook students should refer to the Pass/No Credit policy detailed in the Undergraduate Bulletin. All summer students are limited to four (4) P/NC credits during the entire summer.
• Where can I park? Do I need a parking permit?

• Why do I need a campus ID card?
  You need this card to participate in a summer meal plan, check books out of the library, use the fitness center and gym, and to receive any student discounts. You will need your Stony Brook ID number to obtain a campus ID card.
• Are pre-requisites enforced for visiting students in summer?
  Many courses enforce pre-requisites during summer, however, the decision is at the instructor level. If you are unsure of your preparedness for your course please discuss with the instructor on the first day of class.
• Where can I access a computer and print documents?
  Stony Brook provides computer labs for all students called SINC Sites. All students have a print quota and can print from anywhere to the SINC Sites. Also, if you prefer to use your own computer and need access to software , you can connect to the virtual SINC Site.
