- SUNY Board of Trustees passes resolution in support of SUNY becoming tobacco-free
2013 & 2014
- University engages in research, participates in SUNY regional conferences, begins conversations with internal and external groups to determine best practices for implementation, and develops implementation plans
Winter/Spring 2015
- Tobacco-free steering committee formed
- Discussions with University groups and strategic focus groups take place
Summer 2015
- University Council approves tobacco-free policy
- Working Groups identified – plans and strategies toward implementing the policy developed
- Tobacco-free advisory council formed
Fall 2015
- Tobacco-free advisory council, working groups and steering committee work on preparing the community for policy implementation
- University announces that it will become tobacco-free
- Efforts to offer resources and assistance to those seeking to cease using tobacco enhanced
- Facilities preparation begin (e.g., signage, removal of smoking receptacles and ashtrays, etc.)
Winter/Spring 2016
- Policy goes into effect January 1, 2016
- Continue tobacco-free advisory council, working groups and steering committee efforts
- Continue promoting efforts to offer resources and assistance to those seeking to cease using tobacco
Summer 2016
- Review and assess effects of policy
- Review enforcement
Fall 2016 and Beyond
- Continue to educate campus about tobacco-free policy and offer tobacco cessation resources
