Studying Writing at SBU

big class 1

Communication, writing, critical thinking, collaboration. These skills are highly valued by employers, and are used in a number of jobs. A 2015 survey of employers on behalf of the Association of American Colleges & Universities finds that when hiring, employers place the greatest value on demonstrated proficiency in skills and knowledge that cut across all majors. The learning outcomes they rate as most important include written and oral communication skills, teamwork skills, ethical decision-making, and critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world settings.

Students with training in writing and rhetoric understand the complex ways in which we communicate with various audiences. Our courses will prepare you for successful careers in a wide range of fields such as medicine, science, law, technology, public service, the arts, academia, business, publishing, and journalism, to name a few. Whether you need to write a compelling grant to secure funding for your work, or easy-to-follow instructions for software, or an op-ed to provide readers with knowledgeable information and inspire them to take action, writing skills are essential.

The Program in Writing and Rhetoric offers two minors that can help you to develop your writing skills further: one in Writing and Rhetoric and one in Professional Writing. Click on the link to find out more about either minor.
