A Note From Housing

After submitting a tuition and housing deposit, incoming students will receive their NetID in 3 business days through email notification (starting in November for spring and April for fall). Students who are requesting housing will need their NetID to submit the housing application in the Housing Portal. Students will also receive an email notification from reside@stonybrook.edu with specific dates and deadlines when the housing application is available.

To request housing, you will need to:

  • Submit your $200 housing deposit on SOLAR by January 15 for spring and May 1 for fall
  • Submit the housing application in the Housing Portal (StarRez) by posted deadlines
  • Continue to check your email, StartSBU portal and Housing Portal throughout the process for important steps

Visit the Apply to Housing website for additional details.

Please note, New York students whose home address is within a 30 mile (straight line) distance or less can place a housing deposit but cannot proceed with the housing application until Campus Residences can assess housing availability after the May 1 deposit deadline for fall. If Campus Residences cannot meet the request, the housing deposit will be refunded. Additional details can be found on our Housing Radius Website.

Anyone unable to be housed due to capacity being reached will be refunded their housing deposit. Please review the Commuter Student Services & Off-Campus Living webpage for off-campus housing resources.
