Cooking for a Cause: Seawolves Compete in Iron Chef Style Cooking Competition, Raise Money for Charity
Stony Brook, N.Y., April 20, 2016 - On March 31, 2016, The Seawolves Food Show partnered with the Muslim Student Association (MSA) to host an Iron Chef style cooking competition between three student groups for a chance to win $500 for the Stony Brook charity of their choice and to have their recipe showcased and served at Halal NY in the Union Commons.
The Spicy Seawolves, including its team members, Farha Syed, Arafun Azad, Hiba Ayub and Aaima Ikram, won with their delicious and freshly created Tandoori-spiced chicken and rice after an hour-long battle against two other teams. The dish will be featured at Halal NY in the Union Commons on April 29.
The grand prize included a $500 check, courtesy of the Faculty Student Association (FSA), in which The Spicy Seawolves donated to a Stony Brook charity of their choice, The Sunrise Fund.
The Sunrise Fund is an organization established to raise awareness about childhood cancer and to raise funds for specific projects including a respite center, a playroom, extended support services, as well as facilities and programs that help families who are struggling. The fund also provides vital research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancers.
Each of the three teams were critiqued by six judges on their use of ingredients, uniqueness, appearance and flavor. The judges who tasted the different entrees were MSA President, Humira Kahn, MSA Treasurer, Baasil Shaiff, Student Voice on Campus Dining student, Shannon Sunny, Campus Dining Chef, Eric Reed, Campus Dining Manager, Gretchen Favors and Chaplin Nadim, the faculty advisor for MSA. The teams were also paired with a Campus Dining chef, Chef Ryan Carroll who helped them create their masterpieces.
“Ryan Carroll is an amazing chef,” said Aaima Ikram of The Spicy Seawolves. “He’s so much fun to work with … he likes teaching us little things like how to cut things properly and how to present the food.”
Since 2007, Campus Dining has been committed to providing an outlet to showcase students’ culinary talents. This event develops life skills, supports community building and helps students connect with other students and the Campus Dining culinary staff in a fun, interactive and social setting.
