Designed for:

  • Students who hold a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or a related field such as another engineering discipline, physical science, or mathematics, with a grade point average of at least 3.0 or equivalent in undergraduate-level courses in relevant fields such as Calculus (I, II, III), Physics (with lab components), core mechanical engineering courses, and core civil engineering courses

  • Provides greater depth in a particular area in civil engineering for further advanced study or to pursue a career as a professional engineer

    Requirements

    • Academic Advisor: assigned in student's area of interest before registration. Students receiving financial aid must select a thesis research advisor before the start of their second semester.
    • Academic Standing: maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all coursework
    • Coursework and Research: 30 credits of approved graduate coursework
      • MS Project: Independent project with a focus on innovative analysis or design
        • Minimum of 30 approved graduate course credits
        • Accepted project registered as up to 6 credits of CIV 595 and/or CIV 596
      • MS Thesis: Research-oriented with a more in-depth and formal product than a project
        • Minimum of 21 approved graduate course credits
        • Accepted thesis registered as 9 credits of CIV 599

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    • Can I use an unofficial transcript for my initial application?

    • Is the GRE required?

      • The GRE General Test is optional for Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 admissions. Use test code 2548 (Civil Engineering code: 1102) if you choose to take it.
    • Do I need to submit an English proficiency test if I am a citizen of a country where English is the official language?

      • If English is not your first language, you need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores unless you have a degree from a school where English was the language of instruction, are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, or have been a Teaching Assistant at a school where English was the language of instruction.

    • Is it necessary to contact a faculty member before applying to grad school?

      • Contacting a faculty member is not mandatory but can be beneficial. It helps in building connections with potential advisors.
      • Can I apply for a direct PhD program with only a bachelor's degree?

        • Yes, you can apply if you have a relevant bachelor's degree, meet the GPA requirement, and have completed required coursework.

    Application Status

    1. Once you click the "Finalize Application" button, your application is reviewed and a decision is made by the Civil Engineering Graduate Admissions Committee. The Slate portal will be updated.
    2. If your application is recommended for admission by CIV, it will proceed to the Graduate School for review and a final decision will be made. The Slate portal will be updated.
    3. Please continue to check the Slate portal for information on your application status and admission decision.
    4. Your application will be placed on hold and you will be notified if any action is required regarding transcripts, degree conferrals, test scores, and/or letters of recommendation.

    Due to the high volume of Fall applications, we kindly ask that you refrain from sending multiple emails or calling the department to check on the status of your application until after April 15. All offer letters will be sent electronically to the email address you provided in Slate. Please ensure that your application includes a correct and current email address. If you do not receive an offer letter or any notification by April 15, please feel free to contact the Acting Graduate Program Coordinator Malina Salman at malina.salman@stonybrook.edu.
