CIV Admissions Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply to Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University?
We are currently accepting first-time freshman and transfer students in Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University. When you complete your electronic application, indicate that you would like to be admitted into the Civil Engineering Program. Admissions into the program are handled by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
How do I gain admission to Civil Engineering if I am an Area of Interest (AOI) student at Stony Brook?
For students entering the University in Fall 2018, applications for major admission from AOI and other CEAS students are reviewed twice per year, and must be received by January 5 for Spring admission and June 5 for Fall admission. Students who submit their application on time will be admitted if they meet the major entrance requirements for their respective major of choice (see below).
Students must complete these requirements no later than one year after they enroll in the first course that applies towards major entry. Students must apply for admission by the application deadline immediately following completion of the major entrance requirements, but no later than the one year limit. Admission of AOI students and other CEAS students who apply late will follow the process of Non-CEAS Students and Double Major Applicants.

How do I gain admission to Civil Engineering if I am in another major at Stony Brook (outside of CEAS)?
Applications for major admission from non-CEAS students are reviewed twice per year and must be received by January 5 for Spring admission and June 5 for Fall admission. Students who do not meet the requirements for major entrance will not be considered. Fulfilling the requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Admission is competitive and contingent upon program capacity.

What are the entry requirements for Civil Engineering for students already enrolled at Stony Brook University?
• Completion of at least 10 credits of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering courses (excluding EST 392, EST 393, ESE 301, and CME 233) required for the major,
• Earned a G.P.A. of 3.2 in all mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering courses (excluding EST 392, EST 393, ESE 301, and CME 233) applicable to major requirements with no more than one grade less than B-,
• No courses required for the major have been repeated, and
• Completion of course evaluations for all transferred courses that are to be used to meet requirements of the major.
How do I transfer credits to Stony Brook University?
The Undergraduate Transfer Office maintains and publishes a list of courses from other institutions that are deemed equivalent to Stony Brook courses. Transfer students must fill out the appropriate forms at the Undergraduate Transfer Office in order for their transfer credits appear in their official record. For courses that are not on the list, students should fill out a transfer credit evaluation form in CEAS Undergraduate Student Office. The form will be sent out for transfer credit evaluation to the department that a potentially equivalently course is offered.
I am thinking about adding Civil Engineering as a second major. Do I still need to complete the major entry requirements?
YES. Even though you may already have one major, to declare a CEAS major you still must complete the major entry requirements and follow the process detailed above under “How do I gain admission to Civil Engineering if I am in another major?” Note: Your CEAS major will always be listed as the primary major, and your other major as the second major. **Students cannot double major in two programs that lead to BE degrees**
