SBU Eats Goes Green: Reusable Take-Out Container Program

Reusable SBU EATS Goes Green take-out containers can be picked up at East or West Side Dine-In locations.

When returning your container, remember to let the cashier know before you deposit it in the return bin.

 

1. Let the cashier know you wish to use the takeout option upon entry to the dine-in location.
2. Fill your container with food from East or West Side Dine-In to take on the go. Once you have filled up your takeout container and beverage cup you are required to leave the dining location. Takeout meals are not to be eaten in the dining areas.
3. After you eat your meal, rinse your container of any leftover food.
4. Deposit your UNSANITIZED container in a SBU Eats Goes Green Bin located at East or West Side dine-in.
5. Pick up a SANITIZED container at the register at East or West Side dine-in when using a take-out swipe.

The first container is FREE for students on a meal plan. If you do not bring back the used container, you will have to pay for another container for take-out. Additional containers can be purchased at the register of the Dine-In locations for $5 (Wolfie Wallet can be used).

Students on an unlimited meal plan can use two take-out meals per day.

• Why is SBU Eats implementing the reusable container program?

  SBU Eats wants all students to help us eliminate disposable containers by replacing them with 100% reusable containers to reduce the dependency of fossil fuels, reduce landfill waste and reduce our carbon footprint. Help us save 2.5 million take-out containers from the landfill!

• Is the first container free for all meal plans?

  Yes, all students on a meal plan will receive their first container free. You must swipe your Stony Brook ID card at the register at East or West Side dine-in to receive your SBU Eats Goes Green reusable container. If you do not bring back the used container, you will have to pay for another container for take-out.

• Can I purchase an additional reusable container?

  Yes, additional SBU Eats Goes Green reusable containers can be purchased for $5 using Wolfie Wallet funds or your debit/credit card. Dining dollars can only be used for food and beverage purchases. Dine-in meals are a separate purchase from the container.

• Can faculty and staff purchase a container?

  Faculty and staff can purchase the SBU Eats Goes Green reusable container for $5 using Wolfie Wallet funds or a debit/credit card, however, when returning or exchanging the container they must show their Stony Brook ID to obtain a clean container and to ensure that the account is properly recorded.

• Can I bring my own reusable container?

  No, the only containers that may be used for take-out are the SBU Eats Goes Green reusable containers to ensure that each container is sanitized before use. The SBU Eats Goes Green reusable containers are BPA free, leak resistant, freezer/dishwasher/microwave safe and recyclable!

• Are disposable containers still offered for take-out at dine-in?

  We no longer offer disposable take-out containers. Help us save 2.5 million take-out containers from the landfill!

• Can I use my SBU Eats Goes Green reusable container at any dining location?

  No, the SBU Eats Goes Green reusable containers can only be used at dine-in. It cannot be used at retail locations at this time. Your feedback is important to us! SBU Eats is piloting this program at dine-in first and may potentially expand to other locations in the future.

• Where do I return my SBU Eats Goes Green reusable container?

  Be sure to rinse your container of any leftover food and close the container before placing it in the green bin located at East and West Side dine-in. There are two collection bins at each dine-in location, one next to each register.

• What if I want to return my used container but I do not want to pick up another container at this time?

  When returning your container, please swipe your ID card even if you are not picking up another container. You can return your used container any time and the cashier will "check in" your container so you can "check out" a container the next time you come for a take-out meal. You do not need to carry around a used container all day.

• Will I receive a beverage cup with my SBU Eats Goes Green reusable container?

  Yes, you will receive a hot or cold beverage cup with your SBU Eats Goes Green reusable container. Utensils for to-go use are available only upon request.
