English Department Graduate Awards

AWARD: The English Department Award for Best Dissertation 

DESCRIPTION: For best dissertation filed in current academic year

CRITERIA:

  • Dissertations must be filed during current academic year (Fall - Summer)
  • "Originality and contribution to scholarship; demonstration of significant research; excellence of composition"

NOMINATION PROCESS:

  • Dissertation Advisor makes nomination. 
  • Dissertation advisors should email the GPD with name of student, name of award, date of dissertation defense, title of dissertation, and reasons for nomination.
  • Applicants nominated should submit abstract and sample chapter in PDF format to the GPD.

AWARD: The English Department Service Award

DESCRIPTION: For a student of promise who has made a significant contribution to the department in current AY

CRITERIA:

  • Must be either graduate students or PhD candidates in the Department of English
  • Must be in good academic standing (GPC can verify)

NOMINATION PROCESS:

  • Faculty members make nomination
  • Any faculty member may nominate an MA or PhD student for this award.
  • Faculty member provides nomination letter in email to the GPD.

AWARD: The English Department Award for Best Essay by a Master's Student

DESCRIPTION: For best essay by an English MA student during current academic year. "To provide a financial prize to the graduate student in the Dept. of English who writes the best graduate essay as decided by the department."

CRITERIA:

  • Only papers written in EGL courses in current AY are eligible
  • Must be a student in the Department of English MA or MAT program
  • Only one submission per student

NOMINATION PROCESS:

  • Students apply for this directly - faculty should encourage students to apply.
  • Applicants should email paper (maximum 30 pages) in PDF format to the GPD.

AWARD: The English Department Award for Best Essay by a Doctoral Student

DESCRIPTION: To recognize excellent writing by a doctoral student in the department of English

CRITERIA:

  • Only papers papers written in doctoral EGL courses during the current AY are eligible
  • Must be written by English department doctoral student

NOMINATION PROCESS:

  • Students apply for this directly - faculty should encourage students to apply.
  • Applicants should email paper (maximum 30 pages) in PDF format to the GPD.

AWARD: The English Department Award for the Best Dissertation Chapter

DESCRIPTION: To recognize excellent writing by a doctoral student in the department of English.

CRITERIA:

  • Must be doctoral student in the department of English
  • Submitted chapter must be final draft as confirmed by advisor  (full dissertation doesn’t have to be complete/final)

NOMINATION PROCESS:

  • Students apply for this directly - faculty should encourage students to apply.
  • Applicants should email a chapter of their dissertation in PDF format to the GPD. 
  • The chapter should have been accepted by advisor as a final draft. Advisors need to confirm that the chapter submitted has been approved as a final, approved version of that chapter. (Dissertation titles and abstracts are helpful.)

AWARD: The English Department Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Graduate Student 

DESCRIPTION: "To recognize excellence in teaching by a graduate student in the Dept. of English. Selected on the basis of the teaching evaluations and must be a PhD student/instructor in good academic standing in the Dept. of English."

CRITERIA:

  • Must be English department doctoral student and teaching assistant
  • Must have been primary instructor for at least two courses
  • Must be in good academic standing

NOMINATION PROCESS:

  • Students apply for this directly - faculty should encourage students to apply
  • See application details below for more specific criteria

APPLICATION DETAILS:

Applications must contain the following:

  1. A brief statement, one to two pages, of your approach to teaching
  2. Syllabi, assignments and student evaluations (classie) from two courses that you have taught.
      • These must be courses for which you were the primary instructor. 
      • Both courses must be completed, as opposed to in-progress this semester. 
  3. One letter of support from a person who has observed your teaching. (Emails are fine, addressed to the GPD.)
        • The letter should be from a faculty member and should concern a course for which you had primary responsibility. 
      • The letter may also be from a faculty member for whom you served as a TA if that person can speak about you as a classroom teacher.
  4. Up to five letters (or emails) from undergraduates you have taught may also be submitted, though they are not required.

AWARD: Futures of American Studies Institute (at Dartmouth)

DESCRIPTION: English Department support for a student who is accepted to the Futures of American Studies Institute at Dartmouth

English Department Scholarship for one PhD student whose proposal is accepted by the Institute in the current academic year.

CRITERIA:

  • Must be an English Department graduate student
  • Must have been accepted to the “Futures of American Studies” in the current academic year

NOMINATION PROCESS:

Students should notify the GPD that they have been accepted.
