Alexander Orlov Named National Academy of Sciences' Kavli Fellow

Program honors young U.S. scientific researchers leading their fields

STONY BROOK, N.Y., April 2, 2014 – Alexander Orlov, PhD, Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Stony Brook University, has been named a 2014 Kavli Fellow by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Selected for his research of nanotechnology for environmental and energy applications, Dr. Orlov joins other young leading scientists at a Kavli Frontiers of Science symposium to present his work, network, and form collaborative international research.                                           

Since 1989, the NAS along with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation have sponsored symposia events for Kavli fellows, which gathers participants from a broad range of scientific fields to encourage exploration and collaboration on innovative research ideas. According to the NAS, Kavli fellows are “selected by a committee of Academy members from among young researchers who have already made recognized contributions to science, including recipients of major national fellowships and awards and who have been identified as future leaders in science.” More than 150 Kavli fellow “alumni” have been elected into the NAS and 10 have been awarded Nobel Prizes.

Dr. Orlov will present his work, titled “Nanotechnology for environmental and energy applications: from nanoscale to urban scale,” at a Kavli Frontiers of Science symposium in California on April 4. The event brings together scientists from the U.S. and Germany within each discipline of scientific investigation. He will discuss his work with Stony Brook colleagues investigating new nanostructures for environmental applications in terms of air and water quality, and specific projects, including one that involves use of metal nanoparticles to make fuel from water.

In support of this international collaboration of young scientific leaders, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will make funding available for collaborative research between the U.S. and German scientists.

At Stony Brook Dr. Orlov also serves as a faculty member of the Consortium for Interdisciplinary Environmental Research (CIDER) and an affiliate faculty member of the Department of Chemistry and Institute for Advanced Computational Science. He received an MS in Engineering from the University of Michigan, a M.Phil. in Chemistry, and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Dr. Orlov has published many peer-reviewed articles and conducted more than 60 invited lectures and presentations.
