Professors Robert Harrison and Predrag Krstic of IACS were invited speakers at the 2014 Joint ICTP-IAEA conference on Models and Data for Plasma-Material Interaction in Fusion Devices. Krstic presented the talk The Atomistic Phenomena at the Plasma-surface Interfaces followed by Harrison’s talk Techniques in Uncertainty Quantification and Initial Application to Plasma-material Interfaces. The 2014 conference on Models and Data for Plasma-Material Interaction in Fusion Devices was organized by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Trieste, Italy) in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna, Austria). The conference took place on November 03-07, 2014 at the ICTP in Miramare, Trieste, Italy. Harrison also gave a seminar during the conference the ICTP entitled Seeking a Sustainable Model for Scientific Simulation.

The conference brought together researchers from the areas of fusion, energy, science, and materials science in order to review advances in computational studies of plasma-material interaction processes and the evolution of material microstructures in fusion devices. The program emphasized work that is relevant to hydrogen (tritium) trapping and transport in candidate fusion reactor wall materials. This included modelling of the effects of irradiation upon material microstructure and modeling to understand the influence of microstructure on hydrogen trapping and transport.
