IACS affiliate faculty members Alexander Orlov and Yuefan Deng both recently became recipients of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence: Deng for Excellence in Teaching and Orlov for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Both faculty members, plus 16 other SBU winners, will be honored at the University Awards Dinner to be held on October 13. "It is a very unexpected honor, but I am very grateful to my colleagues and the Provost's Office, who found my accomplishments worthy of the nomination," said Associate Professor Orlov who teaches in the Materials Science and Engineering Department.

The award recognizes "consistently superior professional achievement," reads the SBU website. "It’s a great honor that friends, family and students earned together,” said Professor Deng who teaches in the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department. "I interact with students during lectures, office hours, and emails as well as phone calls. Grasp every opportunity to gain feedback for adjustment, to optimize the learning experience. Encourage mutual teaching between students and create opportunities for students to teach students, reflecting Benjamin Whichcote’s adage: 'There is no better way to learn than to teach.'"
