Institutional Accreditation
Institutional accreditation, sometimes referred to as 'regional accreditation,' is an objective and introspective process of examining, assuring, and continuously advancing educational and organizational quality within institutions of higher education. It is reflected and conducted through outside, non-governmental organizations with the specific purpose of institutional and programmatic review of higher education.
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is the regional accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit institutions of higher education in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and more.
Each campus within the SUNY system is accredited separately by MSCHE. Stony Brook University was first accredited by MSCHE in 1957, with the most recent reaffirmation of our accreditation granted in 2014. Our most recent Mid-Point Peer Review occurred in 2020, and our next Self-Study Evaluation will take place in 2023-2024.
Specialized Accreditation
Specialized accreditation, sometimes referred to as 'programmatic accreditation' or
'national accreditation,' is pursued at the level of an individual School, College
or Program within Stony Brook University. Some disciplines require specialized accreditation
in order for an institution to offer a particular degree program or credential, while
other disciplines consider accreditation an optional process intended to signal a
program's commitment to high-quality education verified by a periodic, external peer-review
process.
