Academic Advising
Undergraduate Psychology Advisors at Stony Brook University provide academic guidance to approximately 2,000 Psychology majors. They can assist with major advising, semester scheduling, transfer evaluations, and discussions about research opportunities.
How to meet with our advisors:
We do not have walk-in advising, you must make an appointment if you wish to meet with a Psychology
major advisor. Our appointments are typically posted every Wednesday at 9:00 AM for the following week (Monday through Friday). Please use Navigate to schedule your appointment.
Important Reminder about Advising:
Stony Brook University operates on a "dual advising model." Which means you should
be meeting with a psychology major advisor AND your general advisor (ATAS, UGC, EOP/AIM,
SCHOLARS, etc) on a regular basis. Additionally, certain academic questions and concerns
are handled specifically by your general education advisors. See Academic Advising Resources for clarity.

Planning Your Program
As a Psychology major, it's important to start planning your coursework early. As highlighted above, you should be meeting with a psychology major advisor AND your general advisor at least once per semester to ensure you're making appropriate progress toward your degree requirements. See Academic Advising Resources for clarity.
When planning your semester schedule, it’s recommended to first meet with your Major
Advisor for guidance on major-specific courses, followed by a meeting with your General
Advisor. Please note that Psychology Major Advisors do not create semester class schedules
for students.
Students needing help with semester scheduling should schedule an appointment well
in advance—ideally 1-2 months before the registration period, especially during your
Senior Year. Many students meet with advisors multiple times per semester, particularly
after their Sophomore Year.
For information on projected courses for upcoming semesters, consult our Course Offerings Drive. Detailed course descriptions are available in the Undergraduate Bulletin, and additional insights can be found in the Prior Semester Syllabi Drive. To see how courses transfer from other institutions, use the Transfer Equivalency Database.
