SIR RUN RUN SHAW LECTURE SERIES

More Than an *Asterisk: Invisibility, Pretendians, and Reclaiming Indigenous Narratives

Nichole Prescott (Assistant Vice Chancellor, UT System)
Thursday, November 9 , 2023
4:00 PM | The Poetry Center- Humanities Room 2001

In data sets, Native Americans are too often made invisible by consignment to the made-up status of “Other” or simply represented by an asterisk. When a group of people is rendered invisible, this existential absence creates opportunities for people to commit Indigenous identity fraud. These “pretendians” can be found in all sectors, but are becoming increasingly common in the academy. Using authenticity as a form of resistance to invisibility, stereotype, and identity fraud, Indigenous academics, journalists, and creatives are engaging in acts of activism both big and small to reclaim the Indigenous narrative.

Dr. Prescott holds a Ph.D. in History and a WGSS certificate from Stony Brook University and currently serves as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University of Texas system. She is a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma (Myaamia) and actively supports the culture and language revitalization of her people.
