- Overview
Stony Brook is required to verify that each person has sufficient funds to cover the period of their stay in the U.S. The documentation we require will also be required at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate when applying for the J-1 visa.
The estimated costs of attendance provided on the tabs above are used specifically for the purpose of issuing DS-2019 forms. It is important to keep in mind that these figures are subject to change and should be considered as rough estimates.
- Acceptable Sources of Funding
Acceptable Sources of FundingVisitors must provide one or more of the following as proof of funds. All documentation must be no more than six months old.

Type of Funding U.S. or Foreign Government Support
Funding Requirements Evidence of support should be presented in English, on agency letterhead, and detail the purpose of the support, amount of support, and specify the period during which the support will be available.
It must be signed by an appropriate government officer.
Type of Funding Agency or Business Support
Funding Requirements Evidence of support should be presented in English, on agency letterhead, and detail the purpose of the support, amount of support, and specify the period during which the support will be available. It should include an original signature from an appropriate officer.
If a private company will provide support, the company must provide a bank statement that documents adequate company assets to provide promised support.
Type of Funding Personal Funds
Funding Requirements A bank statement in the prospective visitor’s own name documenting current balance and transactions for the previous six months.
Alternatively, a letter from the bank manager indicating current account balance and average six-month account balance.
Type of Funding Support from Other Private Individuals
Funding Requirements An Affidavit of Support form (Download Here) must be completed by any private individual willing to offer support to the prospective Exchange Visitor.
The Affidavit of Support must be accompanied by a bank statement in the owner's name documenting the current balance, as proof that the funds promised are available.
Alternatively, a letter from the bank manager indicating current account balance is acceptable.
