Extension of Stay
- Overview
International students in J-1 status are required to complete their academic program by the expected completion date noted in item 3 on the initial Form DS-2019.
Students who are not able to complete their current program by the expected completion date because of valid academic or medical reasons may apply for a program extension with Visa and Immigration Services no later than 30 days prior to the expiration of their current DS-2019.
- Eligibility
In order to be eligible for a program extension, you must meet the following requirements:
- Must be in lawful J-1 status.
- Must have maintained full-time status each semester of your current program.
- Must be able to document funding available that is sufficient to cover the cost of tuition and fees, living expenses for you and any dependents, and the cost of health insurance for you and any dependents for length of the extension (up to one year).

Exchange/Visiting Non-Degree Students
Step 1: Gather your updated supporting documentsHave a copy of your updated offer letter from International Academic Programs and proof of financial sponsorship for the duration of the program.
Step 2: Complete the request in accessVISComplete the "Program Extension Request" in accessVIS.
Step 3: Receive your updated DS-2019If approved for an extension, your updated DS-2019 be available within 10 days.
Degree-Seeking Undergraduate Students
Step 1: Gather your updated supporting documentsComplete the Academic Progress Review Form, and have proof of financial sponsorship for the duration of your program.
Step 2: Complete the request in accessVISComplete the "Program Extension Request" in accessVIS.
Step 3: Receive your updated DS-2019If approved for an extension, your updated DS-2019 be available within 10 days.
Degree-Seeking Graduate Students
Step 1: Complete the request in accessVISComplete the "Program Extension Request" in accessVIS, uploading proof of financial sponsorship for the duration of your program.
Upon submission of the request, an email will be sent to your Graduate Department for approval.
Step 2: Receive your updated DS-2019If approved for an extension, your updated DS-2019 be available within 10 days.
