The Thomas R. and Margherita T. Sexton Award for Academic Excellence While Facing Uncommon Obstacles 2022/23

Scholarship Amount:  $500

This fund is intended to provide an annual award $500 to an undergraduate student in the College of Business who shows exceptional promise in the Business Management program.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be a current full time undergraduate student in the Business Management program within the College of Business as defined by Stony Brook policy.
  • Demonstrate high academic achievement as defined by Stony Brook policy.
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate exceptional promise, achievement, or leadership, based on the application process as outlined by the Dean of the College of Business or his/her designee on the selection committee.
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate service to the College of Business, the greater Stony Brook community, or beyond by participating in community activities, social groups, student clubs, volunteering efforts, or other civic engagements that demonstrate service and leadership as disclosed by the applicant during the application process.
  • Special consideration may be given to students who have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic or educational disadvantages, who self-identify as the first generation in their family to attend college or who are overcoming or have overcome the challenges of a medical condition, or are challenged with medically related difficulties, either learning and/or physical.

  • Have you participated in any College of Business and/or Stony Brook organizations or advisory committees, professional associations, social groups, student clubs, community activities, volunteer efforts or other civic engagements that demonstrate service and leadership as an undergraduate student? Please describe how you have been involved in these activities. (Short answer, approximately 250 words)
  • Please describe any obstacles you have overcome such as socioeconomic or educational disadvantages, including if you are a first generation college student, or if you experienced or are experiencing medical challenges, either learning and/or physical. (Up to 500 words)
  • How will this award assist you in furthering your career upon graduation? (Short answer, approximately 250 words)
  • Please share any additional thoughts you have for the scholarship committee as to why you are the best applicant for this scholarship. (Short answer, approximately 250 words).
  • You will also need to upload a PDF of your resume.
