Diversity Initiatives Grant

Stony Brook University’s (SBU) strategic mission (Our Moment) articulates our commitment to making a transformative impact through innovation and inclusive excellence across education, research, healthcare, economic and cultural development, and social mobility.

Inclusiveness at SBU means providing opportunities for educators/learners/practitioners from all backgrounds to bring their passion and talent into a dynamic intellectual community founded on mutual respect. The SBU community can enhance synergy within and between organizational systems to support an inclusive educational, clinical and work environment, facilitated by the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Intercultural Initiatives (DI3).

The DI3 funds provide opportunities for colleges, academic departments, and administrative units to engage in initiatives that enhance the quality of programs and activities through clearly defined outcomes. These initiatives aim to deliver tangible benefits to students and faculty, support departmental and unit goals, and foster a more inclusive campus community. Each funding category requires evidence of support from the relevant unit or administrators.

Diversity Initiatives (DI) Funds Overview
For over 10 years, Stony Brook University has provided central support for the recruitment, retention, and advancement of students, faculty, and staff. Originally focused on meeting federal, state, and local compliance regulations, the initiative has evolved to prioritize increasing diversity, promoting inclusion, ensuring equity, and enhancing outreach and engagement.

Since 2014, the DI3 funds has supported colleges, academic and administrative units, individuals, and groups to enhance the overall learning, living, and working environment at SBU. Proposals are invited that aim to advance the following priorities:

  • Recruit, educate, train, and hire a diverse and exemplary cadre of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Support the retention, safety, and well-being of everyone at SBU.
  • Enhance the overall living, learning, and working experience for members of the SBU community.
  • Strengthen outreach, engagement, and economic development throughout the local community, New York, and beyond.
