MultiResolution Analysis (MRA) Summer School

MRA Summer School, Stony Brook University August 1-12

MultiResolution Analysis (MRA) Summer School is by invitation only. The school will be held from August 1-12 at the Institute for Advanced Computational Science at Stony Brook University. The vision behind this summer school is to broaden the use of MultiResolution Analysis (MRA) techniques in a multidisciplinary approach extending its reach into chemistry, nuclear physics, materials science, climate science, astrophysics, etc. through the collective effort of the participating research groups. The summer school’s purpose is to establish new and strengthen existing relationships and collaborations among the participants, construct and solidify a common vocabulary that is reflected in literature, train a future generation of graduate students, postdocs, and young researchers, disseminate training materials to the public via online lectures.

This summer school will serve as the inaugural in a series on Scientific Applications of MRA. The school will provide participants with an overview of the mathematical foundation of MRA and an update on recent developments in theory and new applications of MRA. MRA provides a powerful framework for the development of fast and robust solvers of integral-differential equations, which permeate many areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering. The power in MRA methods is in their ability to efficiently handle many length scales by constructing effective sparse representations of the inverse of many differential operators by considering the differences between representations at successive levels. The ability to manipulate efficiently not just the solutions but the operators (integral and differential) provides great flexibility and generality that are only just beginning to find application in the physical sciences.

Housing
Housing will be located on campus in Nobel Halls. These are 3-bedroom, 6-person, suite-style units with a shared living room and bathroom. The rooms are completely furnished (bed, desk, dresser, closet, etc.) and feature individual climate control systems in each bedroom and the common area, wired and wireless ethernet access in all rooms, and cable TV access for those who might choose to bring a TV. Linens are prepped in each room prior to arrival and are exchanged weekly if the resident brings their soiled linens properly bagged to the Conference Office in the building.

Participants should arrive on July 31 before 6 pm and check out on August 12 by noon. The housing office is open from 9am-8pm so participants will need to check-in or check-out during that time.

Stony Brook ID
All registered participants must receive a Stony Brook ID number. For those attending, a Volunteer Demographic Form will be sent to you by email. In order to receive your ID number, you must fill out the form and send it to iacs@stonybrook.edu by July 1, 2016No participant will be granted access to the campus without first having completed and emailed the Demographic Form.

Meals
Each participant will be responsible for his or her own meals.

Travel Reimbursement
Travel Reimbursements are only applicable to those participants who are not Stony Brook students or faculty and who do not live in the immediate area. You may be reimbursed for your travel up to $750. If travel costs exceed $750, we may be able to reimburse those costs contingent upon receiving sponsored funds. Online travel documentation must show payment method with a zero balance. For any other costs to be reimbursed (e.g. ground transportation), you must submit original receipts that must either be hand delivered during the two weeks of the summer school or mailed after the completion of the school. (See travel_reimbursement_instructions.pdf for email and mailing addresses.) Emailed receipts (other than online bookings showing payment method with a zero balance) cannot be accepted.

In addition to receipts, the following Personal Information documents are needed:

  • Driver's License or Photo ID
  • If you are a US Citizen, bring your Social Security #You do not need to bring your SS Card
  • If you are NOT a US Citizen but you are a Permanent Resident, bring a copy of your Permanent Resident Card and Social Security #
  • If you are NOT a US Citizen and here on a visa, bring a copy of your Passport and  I-94 Visa Status Form
