Intensive English Program (IEP)

Fall/Spring Semester
The IEC courses prepare students for attending university in the United States by enhancing their academic language skills. Students receive instruction in critical thinking, essay writing, making oral presentations, note-taking, and comprehending academic lectures.
IEC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
As of October 1, 2024, all students applying to the IEC must submit proof of language proficiency in the form of one of the tests below. These are the minimum scores required for admission to the IEC.
General IEC Admission*
Conditional Undergraduate Admission** TOEFL (iBT) 55 55
IELTS 4.5 4.5 Duolingo (DET) 80 80 *General IEC Admission is for students who want to improve their English language skills for personal reasons or to satisfy Study Abroad programs in their home institutions.
**Conditional Undergraduate Admission is for students who plan to matriculate at Stony Brook University upon completing the IEC advanced level.
IEC Courses & Components
IEC courses at each level have multiple components:
Integrated Academic English
Core IEC courses focusing on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.Enrichment Classes
Includes Grammar, Pronunciation, and level-specific classes such as Prepare for Success at SBU, American Culture, Idioms & Conversation.Chat Room
Sign up for individual or small group meetings with peer mentors for conversation practice. You will be introduced to extra-curricular activities such as clubs, recreation, sports, and other events that enhance college life.At the end of each session, students receive a certificate of completion.
Placement
As of October 2024, the IEC will offer two levels of instruction: high intermediate and advanced. Students must meet the minimum scores above. After testing during the first week of the program, students are placed into an appropriate level.
The IEC may offer classes at different levels for custom programs upon request.

- SUMMER
Global Summer Institute
Intensive English ProgramThe summer session of the Intensive English Program (IEP) is part of the Global Summer Institute. Students will participate in full-time English language instruction with additional extracurricular activities, field trips, and events designed to improve their acclimation to Stony Brook University and the United States.
