What is GROW?
GROW (or the Guided Reflection on Work) is a nationally recognized model that allows for brief, structured conversations between student staff and supervisors about the connections between work and academics.
GROW was created by the University of Iowa and more than 150 schools use the model on their campuses.
How does SBU GROW work?
The SBU GROW model provides four questions that supervisors ask their student staff to answer.
Conversations can be in an individual or group setting and center around a student's
competency development.

How do I begin?
Supervisors of student employees who are interested will need to attend a SBU GROW Supervisor Training. There are also GROW Refresher Trainings for those previously trained.
To sign up, please complete the Stony Brook GROW Registration Form.
The Stony Brook GROW Program:
- Assists student employees in making connections between what they learn through their work experience and how it connects to the skills that employers are seeking, resulting in career ready students.
- Guides students through reframing their views of their on-campus employment through intentional conversations about transferable skills with their supervisors.
- Supports student success by actively assessing the learning of student employees
