Survivor Advocacy at Stony Brook University
CPO offers comprehensive trauma-informed, survivor-focused services for preventing
and responding to sexual violence, including confidential survivor advocacy to help students who have experienced any form of sexual or relationship
violence (including harassment, dating violence and stalking) understand and access
the options available to them.
Survivor Advocacy is available to students whether they have experienced violence on or off campus; it is not a reporting option, and students don’t have to report their experiences in order to access other supportive services.
SBU’s Survivor Advocate and Prevention Associate
Stony Brook’s Survivor Advocate and Prevention Associate can assist students with
identifying and connecting to resources both on and off campus, such as medical care
and SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) forensic evidence collection, counseling,
reporting options, academic support and other information or supports that may benefit
those who have experienced sexual violence.
The Survivor Advocate and Prevention Specialist also leads workshops and coordinates special topic presentations from community experts and service providers like LIADV (Long Island Against Domestic Violence) and ECLI-VIBES, as well as overseeing CPO’s VIPRE (Violence Intervention, Prevention, & Relationship Education) peer educators.

Advocate After Hours
Between 9am and 5pm, M - F, SBU staff answer the advocate phone line. At night, on
the weekends, and on holidays, the Advocate After Hours service picks up the line,
so there is always someone who will respond if you call!
The Advocate After Hours service is not a crisis line, but in situations when a student has experienced sexual assault within 5 days (120 hours) & is seeking a SANE exam, the Survivor Advocate will be contacted to assist the student with accessing the SANE Center.
Coping & Connection Survivor Support Space
A non-clinical, drop-in space for those who have experienced sexual and/or relationship
violence, hosted by CPO staff. Coping & Connection provides an opportunity to connect
with others to learn about common impacts of violence, as well as strategies survivors
can use for coping and self-care, and explore on and off campus resources for support.
Friends and allies can also use the Coping and Connection space as an opportunity to learn more about how they can support those who have experienced violence.
The Survivor Support Space is held weekly on Thursdays at 1pm in the CPO office (Union 108) throughout the fall and spring semesters. For more information, email survivor_advocate@stonybrook.edu .
