All SBU students, faculty and staff are eligible for participation with a Campus Recreation
Membership. If you do not know enough people to form a complete team, come to the
Department of Campus Recreation for more information and/or you can attend the Manager's
Meeting of that sport and find a team as a free agent at the meeting. Individuals
as well as teams are encouraged to participate in intramurals. Teams are usually formed
from residence hall floors, Greek organizations, student organizations, and often
simply groups of friends.
Recognition of Inclusivity
Objective: Campus Recreation is committed to enhancing diversity through the inclusion of individuals,
regardless of their age, ideas, perspectives, disability, ethnicity, gender identity,
national origin, race, religious and spiritual beliefs, sex, sexual orientation, and
socioeconomic and geographic background.
The University’s commitment to diversity is longstanding and reflects the essential
function of a diverse community and plays in the furtherance of its role and mission
as an equal opportunity institution. Given the historic and legal discrimination that
has existed in American society, particular emphasis needs to be placed on the inclusion
of individuals who are members of groups that have been excluded such as, racial/ethnic,
sexual orientation, minorities, women in non-traditional areas, and persons with disabilities.
Campus Recreation strives to recognize, affirm, and value its members for their role
in a global community with greater understanding of their own and other cultures and
perspectives.
Goal: Employees and Hiring
We will employ, develop and retain a student body in keeping with the mission of the
University to provide access and opportunity to individuals from all segments of society
and will create an effective work environment that benefits all members of the campus
community. We will do so by collaborating with the appropriate people to develop responsive,
sensitive strategies toward co-curricular advising with particular attention to the
cultural and identity-related needs of students. Campus Recreation will continue to
shape and maintain an environment designed to welcome, encourage, and embrace differences.

Individual’s participation in Intramural Sports based on their gender identity
The success of the Intramural Program at Stony Brook University is largely dependent
upon the representatives who serve as team captains for each participating team. These
individuals serve as the means of communication between their team and the Department
of Recreation and Wellness. Each team is encouraged to select the best person to represent
their team.
Duties of the Captain Include:
Attending (or sending a representative) the mandatory team Captain's Meeting.
Ensuring that all entries are submitted to the Department of Campus Recreation prior
to the entry closing date for each sport.
Furnishing the Department of Campus Recreation with requested information regarding
player eligibility.
Providing information to each of his/her teammates regarding playing dates, locations,
rule interpretations and rescheduled contests.
Insuring that his/her team does not forfeit.
As soon as the Intramural Captain is selected by a team, he/she should be sure to
submit team time preferences, make sure their team meets the minimum player requirements,
and designate someone to attend the mandatory captain's meeting.
Teams input their availability on IMLeagues.com. All schedules are generated via

this league. League is open to all participants
Men’s, Women’s, and Co-Ed teams
Open Recreational: Participants looking to have fun at a less competitive level should
join this league. League is open to all participants

Mixed Gender: Teams that have members who range in their gender identification or
do not wish to participate in either open comp or open rec should join this league.
These leagues are restrictive in how many gender specific players can be on the surface
at a time. See sport specific rules for more details.

Forfeit Fees: In each of the team sports, teams that forfeit will be required to pay a $10 forfeit
fee before the start of their next game. This fee must be paid in cash or check and
is due by 4pm the day of your next scheduled game. Failure to pay the forfeit fee
prior to the deadline date will result in teams’ elimination from the league. This
fee is being imposed to discouraged teams from forfeiting. If teams forfeit more than
twice, they will be removed from the league.
Forfeit: There are two ways teams can forfeit a scheduled game. One, flat out miss a scheduled
game. Two, show up for a scheduled game with less than the minimum number of participants
needed to start the game. The minimum number of participants needed to start a game
is covered at the league Captain's Meeting and are listed in the sport description
on IM Leagues.
Default:Teams can avoid losing their forfeit fee by defaulting a game. Teams default a game
by contacting the Intramural Office before 4pm of game day and stating they cannot
field enough players for a legal game.
Teams will be given a 5-minute grace period after the scheduled start of their game
before the game will be deemed a forfeit.
Please make every attempt to show up for a scheduled contest. If your team is unable to make a scheduled contest, it is the responsibility of the
captain to notify the Department of Campus Recreation.
