Residential Tutoring Centers

The Residential Tutoring Centers’ (RTC) services—which are provided by the Department of Campus Residences and the  Academic Success & Tutoring Center (ASTC)—offer tutoring opportunities to students who have specific questions pertaining to some of the University's most challenging and demanding courses.

In-Person Walk-in Tutoring

Residential Tutoring Center walk-in tutoring has started for the Fall 2024 semester. For courses offered, email CampRes_Residential_Tutoring@stonybrook.edu.

History and Mission

The RTC launched in the Fall of 2005, under the direction of the Division of Campus Residences. Today, it is under the direction of the Department of Residential Education. In Spring 2016, a partnership was formed with the ASTC to help ensure consistency in both student tutoring experiences and to engage RTC tutors in the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) tutor certification process. The main goals of the Residential Tutoring Centers are to:

  • Provide tutoring to undergraduate students in a location that is uniquely convenient, by being located right in residence hall spaces.
  • Assist students as they adjust to course structures and pedagogy at a comprehensive Research 1 AAU University.
  • Allow students to learn that asking for help is a part of the learning process.
  • Retain students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses and encourage diversity in these areas.
