Departing the U.S.
Any F-1 student discontinuing their education at Stony Brook due to completion of their academic program, leave of absence, or change of status, must first notify Visa and Immigration Services by logging in to accessVIS and completing the "Ending My F-1 Status" eForm request.
Completion of Studies Date
The completion of studies date on your I-20 is considered the end of your program. The grace period begins on this date unless:
- You have applied for Post-Completion OPT.
- You have requested an F-1 transfer to another school.
- You have been approved for a higher degree level at SBU.
- You have applied for a change to another qualifying status.
Note: These changes must occur before the expiration of your grace period.
Please be aware that the end date on your I-20 will be shortened if you end your studies early or complete your academic program prior to the original end date on your Form I-20.
The length of your grace period depends on the reason for your departure from the U.S.
Reason for Departure |
Grace Period Length |
---|---|
Completion of Program |
If you have completed your academic course work (graduated) or completed your practical training, you are allotted 60 days to depart the U.S. |
Authorized Early Withdrawal |
If you have been granted authorized early withdrawal due to a leave of absence, medical leave, or military leave, you are allotted 15 days to depart the U.S. |
Termination of Status |
If you fail to maintain a full course load or otherwise fail to maintain your F-1 immigration status, you are not eligible for a grace period and must depart the U.S. immediately. |
Restrictions During the Grace Period
- You may not reenter the U.S. in F-1 status using your current I-20
- You may not apply for a program extension
- You may not work or study
These same standards apply to any period in between the program end date on Form I-20 and the start of valid OPT authorization, except that students may apply for admission to the U.S. if complying with the documentation requirements outlined on the travel page.
