EFS 003: Fire Extinguisher Training
Duration: 1 Hour (based on number of participants)
Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide training and knowledge in the safe and proper use of portable fire extinguishers.
Who Should Attend: Required at initial assignment and at least annually thereafter for all University employees working in locations where fire extinguishers are present for employee use.

EFS 008: AED/CPR Training
Duration: 2.5 Hours
Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide hands-on training and knowledge in AED/CPR procedures and practices for adults, children and infants.
Who Should Attend: Required at initial assignment and every 2 years thereafter for University department designated employees where AEDs are present.

EIH 001: Asbestos Awareness
Duration: 1 Hour
Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide training and knowledge to limit asbestos exposure to workers who may disturb asbestos.
Who Should Attend: Required prior to or at time of initial assignment and at least annually thereafter for all University employees who have the possibility of exposure to airborne asbestos fibers at concentrations at or above the PEL or excursion limit and to all staff who perform housekeeping and custodial duties.

EIH 002: Hearing Conservation
Duration: 1 Hour minimum
Course Purpose: Every year, approximately 30 million people in the United States are occupationally exposed to hazardous noise. Fortunately, the incidence of noise-induced hearing loss can be reduced or eliminated through the successful application of engineering controls and hearing conservation programs.
The purpose of this course is to prevent University employees from exposure to noise induced hearing loss.
Who Should Attend: Required annually for all University employees included in the Hearing Conservation Program. This training is an initial and annual requirement for supervisors and employees in the following listed departments.

EIH 004: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Duration:1 Hour
Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to ensure that employees understand and know when PPE is necessary, what PPE is necessary, how to properly don, doff, adjust, and wear PPE, the limitations of PPE, and the proper care, maintenance, useful life, inspection and disposal of PPE
Who Should Attend: Required initially for all University employees who in the course of their work are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).Note: Retraining is required whenever assigned PPE becomes obsolete.

EIH 005: Respiratory Protection
Duration: 1 Hour minimum
Course Purpose: An estimated 5 million workers are required to wear respirators in 1.3 million workplaces throughout the United States. Respirators protect workers against insufficient oxygen environments, harmful dusts, fogs, smokes, mists, gases, vapors, and sprays. These hazards may cause cancer, lung impairment, other diseases or death.
The purpose of this course is to provide the proper training and protection to University employees which would prevent exposure to harmful dusts, fogs, smokes, mists, gases, vapors, and sprays.
Who Should Attend: Required annually for University employees who are required to wear a respirator in the course of their job assignments. This training is an initial and annual requirement for supervisors and employees in the following listed departments:

ELS 008 Lab Safety Awareness for Non-Lab Staff

Who Should Attend: University staff (e.g. Building Managers, CO&M) and contractors who are working in laboratories need to be made aware of the potential hazards they may encounter. Note: This training does not replace other required OSHA training. This training is only to make you aware of the hazards potentially found in SBU labs.

ELS 009 Lab Safety - Formaldehyde

Who Should Attend: All lab staff who work in an area where formaldehyde (including formalin and paraformaldehyde) is used. ELS 015: Laboratory Safety Coordinator
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: Everyone who has been assigned to be a Lab Safety Coordinator by their supervisor or department chair is required to take this course.

Laboratory Safety Coordinators are a group of people who understand the need to conduct science safely. They help EH&S to facilitate the implementation of the various safety requirements and assist in establishing a safe work environment by collaborating with EH&S, faculty, other researchers and lab personnel. The Lab Safety Coordinator is an employee familiar with their department operations who has management support and cooperation for necessary activities, including time and resources. They have an appreciation for safety, injury/illness prevention, and an understanding of how safety is integrated into the department's mission.
ELS 017: Laboratory Supervisor Safety

Who Should Attend: Required annually for all University employees who supervise High School Students. Recommended for all University employees who supervise new laboratory researchers or work as Teaching Assistants in laboratory classes.

Who Should Attend: Required annually for University faculty staff and students working in Biosafety Level 2 & 3 labs.

ELS 024 Nitric Acid Safety and Security
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: All faculty, staff and students who work with nitric acid. The training must be repeated annually. This training must be successfully completed to be in compliance with the EH&S Nitric Acid Security Plan.

ENV 001: Hazardous Waste Management
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: Required prior to or at the time of initial assignment for all hazardous waste generators (i.e. if you generate hazardous chemical waste as a result of a process, such as a research experiment or classroom exercise). Required prior to or at the time of initial assignment for all University employees who are responsible for the management, storage and/or disposal of hazardous chemical waste. Follow-up training is required anytime the hazardous waste generating process changes.

ENV 003: Spill Kit Use
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: Required initially for non-laboratory staff and University employees who use spill kits.
ENV 004: Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: Required within 6 months of starting work and an annual refresher thereafter. Required for all University employees who work with or manage the storage of oil products.
ENV 005: Regulated Medical Waste
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: Required prior to or at the time of initial assignment for all regulated medical waste generators (i.e. if you generate regulated medical waste as a result of a process, such as a research experiment or classroom exercise). Required prior to or at the time of initial assignment for all University employees who are responsible for the management, storage and/or disposal of regulated medical waste. Follow-up training is required anytime the regulated medical waste generating process changes.

ENV 006: Universal Waste Management
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: Required one-time within 6 months of starting work. Required for all University employees who work with or manage the storage of universal waste.

Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend:Required for employees that neutralize corrosive materials solely for the purpose of disposal.
ENV 010: Solvent Recovery
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: Required for any person conducting solvent recovery through re-distillation.
ENV 012: Signing a Regulated Medical Waste Manifest
Duration: 1 Hour
Who Should Attend: Current United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) regulations require training prior to or within 90 days of initial assignment (under direct supervision of someone who has been properly trained) and retraining (at least every 3 years) of all employees who perform work functions covered by the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). Any Stony Brook University employee involved in preparing or transporting hazardous materials would be considered a hazmat employee by the HMR*.* Regulated Medical Waste is covered under the HMR! The USDOT therefore requires those who sign the Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) shipping records/manifest be properly trained on this specific job function.

EOS 002: Electrical Safety / LOTO
Duration: 1 Hour
Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to protect workers from electrical shock and/or electrocution. Electric shock and electrocutions occur to workers in various job categories. Many workers are unaware of the potential electrical hazards present in their work environment, which makes them more vulnerable to the danger of electric shock and electrocution.
Who Should Attend: Required prior to initial assignment for all University employees working on or around live electrical equipment such as in mechanical and electrical equipment rooms.Required for all University employees who make entry or standby for the entry of another worker into a confined space.

EOS 004: Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens
Duration: 1 Hour
Course Purpose: Bloodborne pathogens are infectious materials in blood that can cause disease in humans, including Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Workers exposed to these pathogens risk serious illness or death.
The purpose of this course is to protect University workers from potential exposures.Who Should Attend:Required annually for all University employees who are potentially exposed to human or primate blood, tissue, cells or body fluids in the course of their work.

EOS 005: Confined Space
Duration:1 Hour
Course Purpose:The purpose of this course is to instruct workers to follow safe entry procedures and develop a respect for the potential hazards involved. Confined space accidents can have severe consequences. With the proper training and by following safe work practices, these accidents can be eliminated.
Who Should Attend: Required prior to initial assignment, change in assignment duties, change in permit space operations that presents a hazard which the employee has not been trained. Required for all University employees who make entry or standby for the entry of another worker into a confined space.

EOS 007: Machine, Hand and Power Tool Safety
Duration:1 Hour
Course Purpose: Machine, hand and power tools are a common part of our everyday lives and are present in nearly every industry. These tools help us to easily perform tasks that otherwise would be difficult or impossible.
However, these simple tools can be hazardous and have the potential for causing severe injuries when used or maintained improperly.
The purpose of this course is to pay special attention to the proper and safe use of machine, hand and power tools in order to reduce and/or eliminate injuries.

EOS 008: Ladders and Elevated Work Platforms
Duration:1 Hour
Course Purpose: Ladders and elevated working platforms are common ancillary tools for works at heights. Every year, a considerable number of workers are injured while working at height. Some are seriously injured or lose their lives. Detailed analysis reveals that the accidents are either caused by workers not using these ancillary tools or workers fail to use the tools properly.
The purpose of this course is to raise workers' safety awareness in the use of ladders and elevated working platforms, thus helping to prevent injuries.Topics Covered:

EOS 009: Welding Safety (Hot Work)

Course Purpose: Welding and cutting are hazardous activities that pose a unique combination of both safety and health risks. The risk from fatal injuries alone is more than four deaths per thousand workers over a working lifetime.

EOS 011: Ergonomics/Manual Material Handling
Duration:1 Hour
Course Purpose: The Ergonomics Standard is an important step in combating the widespread cases of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) that now affect 1.8 million U.S. workers each year. Over 600,000 of these MSDs of are serious enough to warrant absence from work. Back injuries account for around half of all compensable MSDs.
The purpose of this course is to educate University employees in the proper and safe lifting techniques and to create a better match between the worker, the work they perform, and the equipment they use. A good match increases worker productivity and reduces ergonomic injuries.Who Should Attend:Recommended to all University employees who lift, carry, or handle heavy and/or bulky materials.Topics Covered:

EOS 015: Supervisor's Safety Responsibilities
Duration:1 Hour
Course Purpose: Supervisors play a key role in ensuring a safety program is effective. Every supervisor has at least the following responsibilities with regard to occupational health and safety:
- Employee Training - Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that each new employee, whether temporary or permanent, receives appropriate safety training at the start of employment.
- Personal Protective Equipment - OSHA requires that each supervisor assess the hazards of the work area to determine if the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary, the type(s) of PPE required and to provide training on its use and enforce the use of PPE.
- Accident and Injury Reporting - It is the supervisor's responsibility to investigate and report all accidents or injuries that occur to their employees while at work and to take immediate steps to correct unsafe conditions.

EOS 016: Shipping of Dangerous Goods

Warning! You may be in violation of Federal Law and create a public safety hazard if you ship dry ice, hazardous materials, or any other “Dangerous Goods” unless you have received specific training and the material is properly packaged and labeled.
The transportation of dangerous goods regulations require that, with few exceptions, every person engaged in the handling, offering for transport or transporting of dangerous goods be trained in the area of handling such goods.

EOS 017: Powered Industrial Trucks
Duration:1 Hour
Course Purpose: OSHA requires PIT certification for each operator. The purpose of PIT training, along with proper hands-on training, ensures that an operator is knowledgeable in the safe use, operation and maintenance of a forklift and/or pallet jack. This can help to reduce accidents and ensure that only those with the right training use the equipment.

EOS 021: Food Safety
Duration:1 Hour
Coures Purpose: Despite the fact that food safety has been an important issue in for decades, foodborne illnesses are still a major problem in the United States. The CDC estimates that each year 76 million Americans get sick, more than 300,000 are hospitalized, and a shocking 5,000 people die from foodborne illnesses.
The purpose of this course is to provide education to employees on the importance of proper and safe food preparation, handling, storage and permitting to prevent foodborne illness.Who Should Attend:Required initially for University employees who initiate food permits.Topics Covered:

EOS 022: Health and Safety in the Arts

Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide necessary safety training to ensure that University employees and students who are instructing or involved in any discipline of fine arts understand that they have both a need and a right to know about the hazards and identities of the chemicals to which they are exposed and the necessary protective measures to prevent injury or illness.

EOS 025: OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety and Health
Duration: 10 Hours Note: OSHA regulations forbid this course be given in one continuous 10-hour session. Therefore, this course is given in two 5-hour sessions.
Course Purpose: Construction is a high hazard industry that comprises a wide range of activities involving construction, alteration, and/or repair. Construction workers engage in many activities that may expose them to serious hazards, such as falling from high elevations, unguarded machinery, being struck by heavy construction equipment, electrocutions, silica dust, and asbestos, etc. The purpose of this course is to provide training in the requirements of the OSHA standards and general construction safe work practices. The information, tools, and resources provided in this course are designed to assist those in the industry – whether worker or employer – to identify, reduce, and eliminate construction-related hazards.
Who Should Attend: Required one-time only for all University employees who are new to the construction industry and as a reminder to those who have been working in the construction industry to the hazards associated with their work. This course is ideal for supervisors with safety and health responsibilities and for employee safety and health awareness. Upon successful course completion, you will be given a Department of Labor OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety and Health course completion card. Note: To receive full credit and be issued an OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety and Health course completion card, attendees MUST attend both sessions in their entirety.

SBRS 005: Dental NOMAD Radiation Safety Training

Course Purpose: Completion of this course is required prior to the operation of Dental X-ray or NOMAD X-ray units and at least annually thereafter.

Laser Safety HNZ213
Duration: 30 minutes
Course Purpose: Staff working with or around lasers are required to complete this training at the time of initial assignment, and at least annually thereafter. Physicians credentialed in laser use are required to complete this training at the time of initial assignment and must repeat the training at a minimum frequency of 4.5 years.
Who Should Attend: Personnel below working with Class IIIB and Class IV Lasers
