Biosafety Training Requirements

Training is a key element in the process of working safely with biohazardous materials. Successful completion of a range of biosafety and other safety and security-related training programs are required prior to accessing and/or working in SBU laboratories. Special attention should be paid to positions where mentoring and on-the-job training are necessary.  New hires/employees and students without adequate prior experience should not be allowed to work unsupervised with hazardous materials until they have adequately demonstrated proficiency to thier PI or supervisor who is responsible for documenting the process. Basic biosafety training requirements at SBU are summarized below.

All lab personnel using or are exposed to biohazardous materials in BSL-1, BSL-2 or BSL-3 laboratories must complete these courses, one time:

All lab personnel using or are exposed to biohazardous materials in BSL-2 or BSL-3 laboratories must also complete annually:

All lab personnel working with or exposed to human or primate source material (tissue, blood, cells, etc.) must also complete annually:

The listed courses are in basic lab safety principles and do not replace the need for training in the laboratory in safe performance of specific procedures and techniques that are unique to the experiments being performed.
