MACHINE GUARDING (HAND AND POWER TOOLS)

Proper machine guarding is essential to protecting personnel from the hazards of moving machinery, including points of operation, rotating parts, and flying debris. Adherence to these guidelines is critical for preventing serious injuries such as lacerations, amputations, and crushing injuries.

• Who is responsible?

  Each employer shall be responsible for the safe condition of tools and equipment used by employees, including tools and equipment which may be furnished by employees.
  Compressed air shall not be used for cleaning purposes except where pressure is reduced to less than 30psi, and then only with safety glasses with side shields.
  

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  Provide proper personal protective equipment and have employees wear it (e.g., safety glasses, hand and arm protection, hearing protection, etc.).

• Training

  Employees must be trained and equipped to prevent injuries associated with hand and power tools. Employees assigned to train other employees shall be trained through a qualified training program. View the EH&S training webpage.
