DOSIMETERS

Employees and students who are likely to be occupationally exposed to 10% of the annual limit will be provided dosimeters to monitor cumulative radiation exposure.

• Radiation monitoring overview

  If a personal radiation monitoring dosimeter is issued to an individual, then that individual must wear the radiation dosimeter at all times when working with or near a source of ionizing radiation. Failure to wear the dosimeter and/or return it for exchange puts the individual and Stony Brook University in non-compliance with New York State regulations. Dosimeters are exchanged on a monthly or quarterly basis depending upon the status of the department or individual. Dose reports are reviewed by Radiation Safety. If an individual receives radiation exposure during a quarter that exceeds ALARA 1 levels, then the RSO or designee will notify the individual. If ALARA 2 levels are exceeded, then the RSO or designee will notify the individual and perform an investigation to determine the source and reason for the exposure. Individuals are advised to review their dose reports to monitor any exposure they may have received. You may view your own dose report at any time by logging into the Landauer website using instructions on the link below. If you are unable to view your report online, you can request your dose report be provided to you by Radiation Safety.

• Radiation dosimeter instructions

  As a badged radiation worker at Stony Brook University, please pay attention to how you are wearing your radiation dosimeter. An accurate record of your radiation exposure is dependent upon wearing your radiation dosimeter properly and exchanging them in a timely manner. View Dosimeter Placement Reference.
  
  Points to Remember:

  1. Timely exchange of dosimeters at each new cycle with your departmental dosimetry coordinator.
  2. Wear your issued radiation dosimeters whenever working in the vicinity of radiation.
  3. Wear your dosimeters according to the type issued.

  Chest Dosimeter (Whole Body Dosimeter):

  • Without lead protective garment: Wear between shoulders and waist
  • With lead protective garment: Wear outside lead garment between shoulders and waist.

  Collar Dosimeter:

  • Worn on outside of lead garment at neck level.

  Fetal Dosimeter:

  • If worn without lead protective garment: Wear low in center of abdomen.
  • If worn with lead proactive garment: Wear low in center of abdomen, underneath lead protective garment.

  Ring Dosimeter:

  • Worn on dominant hand with white portion facing inward and always remember to wear underneath protective gloves.

  How to quickly tell where you should wear your radiation dosimeter(s):

• View your dosimeter report

  Individuals are advised to review their dose reports to monitor any exposure they may have received. You may view your own dose report at any time-by-time by logging into the Landauer website. If you are unable to view your report online, you can request your dose report be provided to you by Radiation Safety.

• Request exposure history

  For outside institutions requesting occupational exposure records of former Stony Brook employees, please contact radiationsafety@stonybrook.edu or call (631) 632-6410.

• Order a new dosimeter

  Stony Brook provides employees and students who meet criteria for radiation dose monitoring a National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) accredited dosimeter. View the order form for a dosimeter. 

  Applicants who have previously been monitored for radiation exposure at another institution must also complete the Radiation Exposure History form.

• Delete or transfer a dosimeter

  Radiation Safety must be informed of users that terminate use of dosimeters and those who will be transferring dosimeters to a different Stony Brook department. View the required form to delete or transfer a dosimeter. 

• Report a lost dosimeter

  An accurate record of your radiation exposure is dependent upon wearing your radiation dosimeter properly and exchanging them in a timely manner. All lost dosimeters should immediately be reported to Radiation Safety. View the required form to report a lost dosimeter.

• Pregnancy declaration form

  Fetal dosimeters will be issued to workers who submit a voluntary declaration of pregnancy. View the voluntary declaration of pregnancy form.
