Training Requirements
On the first day of work, prior to commencement of work activities involving hazardous materials (chemical, biological and radioactive material), all new lab workers are required to receive Lab Specific Safety training. This lab specific training does not need to be performed all at the same time. Emergency procedures and general lab safety procedures must be covered when the new worker starts. Other items can be covered when the new worker begins that procedure. There are several mandatory training requirements that must be met by laboratory workers. It is the laboratory supervisor, Principal Investigator and Department Chair's responsibility to ensure that everyone in their area has met these requirements. Environmental Health and Safety provides the training in several ways: open sessions; departmental training and on-line training. The training attendance is recorded in the staff's PeopleSoft record.

Safety training may also be required to fulfill grant applications (NIH or IBC requirements).
EH&S offers training courses on-line through the Safety Management System platform. Taking the courses on-line provides the same "credit" that you get when you attend the "live" classroom version. The on-line course can also be used to review the course material after you have taken the live class, or to take the annual refresher course, when required. Additional information on accessing these courses can be found here.
Use the training worksheet for additional information on courses you may need to take.
