About the Red Book

Stony Brook University is committed to a safe campus community and respectful learning environment. Professional staff and faculty members are often the first to notice a student in distress. These guidelines are intended to provide resources to help you respond when you recognize a student in need. 

Please know that these guidelines are neither all-inclusive nor exhaustive; as that would not be practical. The purpose of this resource is to provide some of the “need it now” information and suggested courses of action. No two scenarios are exactly the same, and no single person is well-versed in all issues and concerns. For these reasons, we’ve provided brief and usable information so that any individual who is aware of a potential student crisis and emergency situation may have a better idea of what can be done.

As part of this resource, you will find information organized by “issue” including descriptions and step-by-step suggestions on how to respond. Most importantly, trust your instincts. If a student leaves you feeling worried, alarmed, or threatened, please don’t hesitate to contact UPD (University Police Department). If you have questions or concerns regarding a particular protocol, also please don’t hesitate to consult with the offices referenced in the resources section.

A note on privacy: FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, permits communication about a student of concern in connection with a health and safety emergency. Observations of a student’s conduct or statements made by a student are not FERPA protected.
