Laboratory Safety
The Laboratory Safety program supports EHS's Mission by providing guidance and support to researchers in order to identify and eliminate or reduce hazards, train personnel, and ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations . There are many regulatory requirements that laboratories must comply with when working with biological, chemical and radiological materials and it is our task to help identify the appropriate regulations and support the lab in maintaining compliance with them. The Laboratory Safety program provides policies, procedures, training, guidance, and other information to assist research and teaching personnel to provide a safe and healthful environment in which to operate.
The Laboratory Safety Policy establishes the minimum requirements to protect laboratory workers from potential exposures to hazardous materials and processes found in laboratories at Stony Brook University. The procedures listed in this policy are the minimum work practices that apply to all laboratory work at SBU.
The Chemical Hygiene Plan and Radiation Safety Manual provide additional information and requirements for working with hazardous materials.
All laboratories must be registered with EH&S in the Lab Registration database. This information is used for emergency planning and other regulatory compliance. Principal Investigators can register, review and update their registration annually at the Lab Registration web page.
