Shipping of Dangerous Goods
Hazardous materials include hazardous chemicals, infectious substances, radioactive materials, compressed gases, dry ice, lithium batteries, aerosol cans and other pressurized items and more. Commonly shipped from this university include dry ice, infectious substances and biological samples.
The transportation of dangerous goods regulations require that, with few exceptions, every person engaged in the handling, offering for transport or transporting of dangerous goods be trained in the area of handling such goods.

Shipping of Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Materials Program
Training required prior to and every 2 years thereafter for all University employees who transport, cause to be transported or ship dangerous goods to include:
- Dry ice (click for more information)
- Infectious and/or diagnostic specimens
- Flammable
- Combustible
- Corrosive
- Reactive
- Oxidizing
- Toxic
- Radioactive
- Infectious
- Batteries (Via UPS) Shipping Devices with Batteries
Warning! You may be in violation of Federal Law and create a public safety hazard if you ship dry ice, hazardous materials, or any other “Dangerous Goods” unless you have received specific training and the material is properly packaged and labeled.
Regulations require that only properly trained personnel are to prepare shipments and documents for hazardous materials shipments.
Maximum civil penalty amounts have increased for hazmat violations, hazmat training violations, and hazmat violations resulting in death, severe injury, or other serious incidents. The new penalty amounts are as follows:

- Violation of hazmat regulations: from $89,679 to $96,624
- Violation resulting in death, severe injury, etc: from $209,249 to $225,455
- Violation of hazmat training regulations: from $540 to $582
